About The Author

About the author: Apostolos (Toly) P. Kouroumalis—known in the creative world under the pen name TOLY A.K.—is an artist and author whose work spans film, animation, literature, and lowbrow visual art. A graduate of the film animation department in 1996, Toly has worked on and off in the film industry, developing a unique artistic identity that blends unconventional imagery with cinematic storytelling. His versatility allowed him to shift seamlessly between mediums, contributing to both independent film projects and personal artistic endeavors that reflect his bold, boundary-pushing style.

As a lowbrow artist, a movement established by Robert Williams and Coop, Toly embraces art that is raw, unfiltered, and unapologetically honest. While his pieces often border on the extreme and may initially be perceived as fantastical, they consistently aim to capture the truth of a moment revealing the emotional and psychological states of the subjects he portrays. His work draws heavily from comic book aesthetics, showcasing vivid imagery and vibrant expression. This distinct style has earned him international exposure, with exhibitions reaching audiences as far as Zurich (Artbox) in 2019 and Barcelona in 2021.

Beyond the canvas, Toly A.K. has also made notable strides in cinema. His short film “Ascention” was featured at the prestigious Cannes Short Film Corner, expanding his recognition within the global film community. His book “All Purpose”, an introspective and visually striking literary work, is currently being promoted through Writers Branding, further positioning him as an emerging voice in contemporary art and literature. His experimental films are curated at the Cinematheque Quebecoise and distributed through CFMDC and Dark Side Releasing, while his books are preserved within the Bibliothèque Nationale archives, solidifying his contribution to modern artistic culture.
